If I want to multiply near base numbers like 98 × 97,then how to do it quickly?
98/ -2
× 97/ -3
Step1 : 98 is away from 100 by 2 numbers hence -2
Step2 : 97 is away from base 100 by 3 numbers hence -3
Step3 : answer will be in two parts , multiply the two deficients -2 and -3 so the answer is +6 ,which we will write as 06 :. _____06( part 2 of the answer)
Step4: to find 1st part, you can do 97-2 = 95 or 98-3= 95, hence
The final answer by joining two parts is :. 9506
It’s so easy….
Let’s take another example:
91 × 94
91/- 9
94/ -6
Answer :first part 94-9 or 91-6 =85
Second part: (-9)×(-6)= 54
Final answer : 8554
Consider another example with base 1000
Multiply 997 × 993
997/ -3
993 /-7
Answer: part 1: 993-3 or 997-7 =990
part 2: (-7)×(-3)=21 but we write as 021 because now the base is 1000
Joining both parts, the answer is
990021
this is very easy!!!
Now let’s take difficult example
989 × 988
989 /-11
988 /-12
First part = 989-12=977 or
988-11=977
Second part = (-11)×(-12)=132
Final answer is 977132
Let’s take one more example:
88 × 91
88/-12
91/-9
First part 91-12 or 88-9 = 79
Second part (-12) × (-9) = 108
Here the second part has 3 digits ,which are not allowed as base is 100 with 2 zeros in it , hence 1 will be carry forward and added to the first part : 79 + 1= 80
Final answer is : 8008
